THE UPSHOT:

We’ve published more than 200 issues of 5 Mag at this point, and at 3 to 8 features per issue that would mean we’ve probably profiled somewhere around 500 to 800 artists (not counting duplicates). I can still name hundreds that we’ve yet to get in the magazine in a big meaningful way, though. That’s the case with this issue’s cover story. Somehow, in 17 years and a lot of friends in common, we never spoke to Orlando Voorn for a 5 Mag story before.

Doesn’t take much to fix it though: a dope new record (Between the Surface on Rhythm Cult), a well-addressed email and you’re golden. We managed to wedge in a little Detroit talk, a little DMC folklore and of course a lot about what he’s doing now — a discography that has multiplied like a virus in recent years. (The cover photo for this issue is by Krijn Noordwijk.)

Lauren Krieger speaks to Italian producer Turbojazz (who on his new album Whateverism managed to collaborate with a bunch of the people that Beyonce would later work with on Renaissance), plus an always amazing talk with the always amazing Victor Simonelli, Maxime Dangles, Carly Wilford and a big cover mix from a person you should know about, Mira Ló.

There’s much more inside — the complete list of contents were below. Thank you for your support!

INSIDE ISSUE #205:

🔴 Orlando Voorn: Put Your Soul Into The Thing. Orlando Voorn was making techno history the minute he touched down in Detroit. But the legendary producer and DJ has never stopped grinding. A profile interview for 5 Mag’s latest cover story.

🔴 Turbojazz: Whateverism. Celebrating two decades of deep diving through dance music, Turbojazz delivers an all encompassing album that reflects his years of exploration & passion with the release of Whateverism.

🔴 Daybreak: Carly Wilford on The Awakening. During the pandemic, Carly Wilford came across a study claiming that only 2% of all music producers were women. Reading that stat, she says, “gave me the fire under my feet to learn.

🔴 Victor Simonelli: The Early Years. Three generations of dance music DJs, producers & fans have been enlightened by the funky, souled’up testament of Victor Simonelli. A new collection gathers together his deeply influential early ’90s house tracks for the first time.

🔴 Les Délivrés. Maxime Dangles’ new album is a radical indictment of the exploitation of the workers of the new economy: France’s delivery men.

🔴 Mira Ló – The Cover Mix. French DJ and producer Mira Ló takes over this issue’s cover mix.

🔴 Platform Death. Galaxy Brain: Why did DJ platforms turn so bad? What are the alternatives — or will live-streaming kill the DJ mix?

🔴 AI vs Art. Lawsuits are flying against the creators of generative AI on behalf of artists, but the music industry is nowhere to be found.

🔴 Screen Grab: Zeeon Synths. The best kept secret of the iOS platform runs like a charm on the Mac.

🔴 Flacbox’ing. How to stream — or just play — hi rez music on your phone via a free, simple app.
