Like so many producers from Chicago and the outremer called “the rest of the world,” I first discovered Black Sjuan on a release on Audio Soul Project’s Fresh Meat Records — 2019’s Dearly Beloved Versions. He’s also released tracks on Rees Urban’s Jackinthebox and Sean Smith’s Smooth Agent, another two Chicago labels that have consistently supplied DJs with heavy ammunition over the years.

And then one day last April Black Sjuan dropped six EPs on Bandcamp on more or less the same day, featuring some music that if it isn’t new is probably new for you. Rogue Disco stood out immediately with a mix of “Dearly Beloved (We Come 2 House)” and “Afros In The Dark” — two tracks originally released together in 2017. “Galore” and “The Rhythm Method” are fine as fuck tracks that cook like classic sample-heavy Relief Records joints. House producers using Bandcamp as a sandbox rather than yet another download store is one of my favorite things and Black Sjuan and Assylum Effort Records is a new find.
