It seems like it was only yesterday that Hakim Murphy introduced readers in Chicago to Skudge and, I guess, on a galactic time-scale, it was. Thirteen years ago Skudge and the eponymous label crashed into a drab and dull electronic music scene. Thirteen years later Levon Vincent takes on “Convolution,” the A Side from SKUDGE001. There’s a clear affinity here for the material, which presaged a darker, more physical turn for analog-driven techno and deep house. Levon Vincent is a fellow traveler and his work on these remixes is nothing short of stunning. The “scream” version is the one for moving bodies; the b-side remix is for saving souls. Big chords, drowning in atmosphere form a cathedral of sound, reverb catching each note and carrying it on through a cavern that races into the distance and whose arches reach the sky. These remixes are nothing less than stunning.
