There was a point about four hours ago when I had no idea who Naux was. I’ve been deep in a rabbit hole with the French producer’s catalog and it’s a very weird place to be. Nearly every producer claims they live free in a universe unshackled by genre… but I think Naux actually does. No matter what he uses to make his tracks, or the BPMs they fall under, or the too-cute genre tags premiere pages or download shops attach to his music… it’s just fucking good. Using the same kit and sounds as anyone else and samples that probably anyone could get, Naux’s tracks are irresistible little demons — monsters that get in your head and have a hard time getting out.
That is nowhere more apparent than on 100 Dessus Dessous. If you’ve got to pick words for these, you’d say hazy, you’d say lo-fi, you’d bring up the word “French” and hope the reader makes all kinds of touchy assumptions about it. But the most important thing is that they’re really good tracks — songs without pretending to be songs, just addictive hooks that catch you quick and reel you in. “All Good Things” and “100 Dessus Dessous” are more than the sum of their parts — they’re parts that many have put together in some form or another before, but they never held together or shined this bright. And despite the lo-fi aesthetic, they do shine — hear this across a room and you’ll find people shouldering toward the DJ like they’re pulled by a magnet. There’s a really swingin’ remix of the title track by Yann Polewka as well. Every bit of this 12″ is stuffed full of wonders.
